About BIRMINGHAM ETHNIC EDUCATION & ADVISORY SERVICE
BEEAS is a charitable trust established in 1984 by members of the Asian community, based in Lozells. Recognised with Investor in People accreditation and the Employer of Excellence Award, its primary aim is to provide education and training to adults in the local community. The organisation is overseen by a dedicated Board of Trustees, chaired by Dr Lynne Morris CBE, and has been led by Executive Director Najma Razaq since 2006. Its team includes managers, administrative staff, eight ESOL tutors, classroom assistants and volunteers who work together to support learners from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Yemeni and Somali communities.
BEEAS aims to improve learners’ English language skills, promote independence and help them access further education, employment and wider opportunities. In addition to English language classes, the organisation provides information, advice and guidance, as well as recreational, social welfare and health education support. Its classes operate across seven inner-city primary schools, a sheltered housing centre and two church centres, offering four levels of ESOL provision from Pre-Entry to Entry Level 3. Learners undergo initial and diagnostic assessments, receive individual learning plans each term and participate in regular tutorials to monitor their progress. Bilingual staff help strengthen communication and build positive relationships, while learners are supported to progress towards accredited courses, higher-level qualifications at local further education colleges and employment opportunities.
