Detailed description
Become a West Birmingham Health Champion with Bethel Health & Healing Network. Choose between our Doula (maternity support) or Rapha (mental wellbeing listener) pathways. Free training, mentoring, supervised experience, and progression into NHS, maternity, mental health or social care roles. Open to West Birmingham residents only (other postcodes could be considered, please don't be discouraged from applying). No experience needed.
This Fairer Futures-funded programme offers two volunteer pathways:
🟣 Doula Health Champion (Maternity Support)
Support pregnant women and new mothers through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.
🟢 Rapha Health Champion (Mental Wellbeing Listener)
Provide 1:1 emotional support through active listening and guided reflective practice.
Both roles are ideal for anyone looking to develop skills, give back to the community, and build a meaningful career in health or wellbeing.
🎓 What You’ll Receive
- FREE training (Doula or Reflective Listening, depending on pathway)
- Safeguarding and boundaries training
- Supervised practice & mentorship
- Experience suitable for NHS, midwifery, nursing, mental health, and counselling
- Travel expenses covered
- Certificate on completion
- Supportive community environment
👥 Who Can Apply
- Must live in West Birmingham (Fairer Futures requirement)
- Age 18+
- Compassionate, reliable, and good with people
- No prior experience required
- Perfect for students, career changers, parents, or anyone passionate about health and wellbeing
- Community language speakers encouraged (Arabic, Urdu, Panjabi, Somali, Bengali, etc.)
🧭 Time Commitment
- Minimum 6-month volunteering period
- Around 3–5 hours per week, flexible around your schedule
- Doula pathway includes support around appointments and one birth experience
- Rapha pathway includes 1:1 listening practice sessions
💼 Journey & Progression
After completing the programme, volunteers have can move into:
- NHS roles
- Maternity Support Worker roles
- Mental Health Support
- Counselling pathways
- Social care
- University/college health courses
