One Walk Event Crew volunteers help us create an inspiring day for members of the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community.

What will I be doing?

There are various roles available on the day, including

  • Setting up in the Event Village before walkers arrive.
  • Welcoming walkers as they arrive, registering them and handing out their Breakthrough T1D tshirts.
  • Leading or stewarding the walkers along the route to make sure they’re going in the right direction and cheering them on to keep them motivated.
  • Looking after the merchandise stall or handing out information about Breakthrough T1D.
  • Handing out finishers’ medals and refreshments when walkers return to the Event Village at the end of their walk.
  • Helping us pack everything away at the end of the event.

What skills or experience do I need?

You don’t need any specific skills or experience – you just need to be friendly and enthusiastic, with a can-do attitude. We’ll give you all the information you’ll need before you start your role, and there’ll be someone on hand on the day to support you.

What training and support will I receive?

  • We’ll send you a copy of our Volunteer Handbook, which will give you all the information you’ll need to know about volunteering with us. We’ll also ask you to sign and return a copy of our Volunteer Agreement, which sets out what we’ll do to support you, and what we expect from you, during your time volunteering with us.
  • We’ll make sure you have the name and contact details of a staff member who will support you before the event, and of the person responsible for the event on the day.
  • We’ll tell you in advance what your role on the day will be and two weeks before the event, we’ll invite you to a pre-event briefing (online) to give you more information and answer any questions you have.
  • We’ll send you a volunteer information pack with confirmation of your role on the day, details of timings for the day, the walk route, and other relevant event information. We’ll ask you to read and sign our safeguarding guidelines, and also complete and return an emergency contact form before you volunteer at the event.
  • We’ll give you a Breakthrough T1D t-shirt to wear.
  • There’ll be a face-to-face briefing at the start of the event, as well as any role-specific training, and there’ll be someone on hand throughout the day in case you have any questions.
  • We’ll send you an expense form to claim back any out-of-pocket expenses (please see our volunteer expenses policy in the Volunteer Handbook).
