Detailed description
Purpose of the Role
As a Community Befriender Volunteer, you will be matched with adult carers aged 25 and over who wish to access support services or social opportunities in the community but may face barriers to doing so because of their caring responsibilities.
Working closely with the Befriending Co-ordinator, you will help identify suitable activities and opportunities, encourage and empower carers to engage with them, and support them in building the confidence to attend independently in the future.
This is a rewarding and people-focused role that offers the chance to make a genuine difference to the wellbeing and confidence of local carers.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Build positive and trusting relationships with carers, maintaining regular contact and professional boundaries.
- Work with carers to research, identify, and access local activities, groups, or events that match their interests.
- Encourage and motivate carers to take part in activities, helping to overcome any barriers to participation.
- Support carers in booking activities or events, ensuring they feel confident with the process.
- Develop a gradual plan to reduce support over time, helping carers attend activities independently.
- Travel across the borough to meet carers or attend community venues (using your own vehicle or public transport).
- Complete any required paperwork, records, and evaluations linked to your work.
- Maintain communication with the Befriending Co-ordinator and report progress or concerns promptly.
- Uphold confidentiality, safeguarding, and professional standards at all times.
- Perform other reasonable duties as discussed and agreed with your supervisor.
Preferred Skills and Qualities
- Experience of working or volunteering with adults in community or support settings.
- Confidence engaging with people from a range of backgrounds.
- Understanding of safeguarding principles and personal safety.
- Ability to follow policies, procedures, and professional boundaries.
- Adaptable to changing circumstances (e.g. cancellations, rescheduling).
- Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication, empathy, and listening skills.
- Flexible approach to working hours (may include evenings or occasional weekends).
- Reliable, compassionate, and passionate about providing a high-quality service for carers.

Additional Notes / Special Requirements
- This role requires good, timely communication with Carers Trust Solihull staff and carers.
- A consistent commitment to agreed hours is essential, as carers need to feel they can rely on this project.
- An enhanced DBS check and references will be required before starting.
- Travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with Carers Trust Solihull’s volunteer policy.
