Detailed description

Volunteer Role Description

Role Title: Volunteer Driver

Organisation: Carers Trust Solihull
 Hours: Flexible

Purpose of the Role

As a Volunteer Driver, you will play a vital role in helping young carers aged 5–25 access community support, social opportunities, and respite activities that they would otherwise be unable to attend due to their caring responsibilities.

Using a Carers Trust Solihull 5-seater vehicle, you will transport young carers safely between their homes, pick-up points, venues, and drop-off locations. Your support helps to reduce isolation, increase participation, and ensure young carers can enjoy a well-deserved break from their caring role.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to requests or rota allocations for driving.
  • Read and follow pre-issued instructions, route plans, and event details.
  • Follow pre-determined routes and logistical requirements for each task.
  • Comply with all driving procedures and vehicle-use policies, particularly regarding lone working and out-of-hours operations.
  • (Note: A work phone and emergency contact support are always available.)
  • Follow safeguarding protocols and report any incidents or accidents promptly.
  • Make full use of provided tools such as a work phone, sat-nav, and vehicle safety features.
  • Follow relevant risk assessments and complete any required paperwork accurately.
  • Sign out/in all items used (e.g., car keys, fuel cards, documentation).
  • Conduct routine vehicle checks (fuel, cleanliness, tyres, etc.) to ensure the vehicle remains safe and ready for use.
  • Maintain professional communication with Carers Trust Solihull staff, families, and other volunteers.

Preferred Skills and Qualities

  • A full, valid UK driving licence held for a minimum of two years.
  • Experience working with or supporting children and young people.
  • Confidence when engaging with families, young people, and the public.
  • Understanding of child safeguarding and personal safety practices.
  • Ability to follow organisational policies, procedures, and codes of conduct.
  • Adaptability to change (e.g. last-minute cancellations or revised routes).
  • Ability to remain calm and handle challenging situations (e.g. sickness or anxiety in the car) with support.
  • Strong sense of responsibility, reliability, and care for others.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible and willing to support activities that may occur during evenings, weekends, or school holidays.
  • Passion for contributing to a high-quality, caring service for young carers.

What You Will Gain

  • Direct impact: Play a crucial role in helping young carers access the same opportunities as their peers.
  • Rewarding experience: Make a meaningful difference by giving young people a break from their caring role.
  • Skill development: Gain experience in safeguarding, communication, and professional conduct.
  • Training and support: Receive induction, ongoing guidance, and relevant role-specific training.
  • Community involvement: Join a dedicated, compassionate volunteer team making a real difference across Solihull.
  • Recognition and appreciation: Enjoy regular volunteer events, thank-you initiatives, and references upon request.

Additional Notes / Special Requirements

  • You must hold a valid full UK driving licence and have held it for at least two years.
  • All licence endorsements must be declared before commencing the role.
  • An enhanced DBS check and reference verification will be required before starting.
  • Travel expenses (fuel, mileage, etc.) will be reimbursed in line with Carers Trust Solihull’s volunteer policy.
