Please come along to our taster volunteering session, where you will be helping us sort and pack books for children with very few or no books of their own.
Join Us for a Volunteering Taster Session!
We'd love to welcome you to our volunteering taster session on Monday 12th October! Whether you can pop in for an hour or stay for the whole day, we'd be delighted to see you and introduce you to the Children's Book Project.
During term time, we run volunteer book-sorting sessions in Birmingham every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00am to 3:00pm. This taster session is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about our book gifting programme, meet our friendly team, and see first-hand the impact our volunteers make in local communities.
You'll also have the chance to meet and work alongside corporate volunteer groups who spend the day supporting our mission. If you've ever thought about volunteering with us, this is the perfect way to get involved and discover whether it's something you'd enjoy. We hope that after attending a few sessions, you'll choose to become part of our wonderful volunteer community, ideally joining us at least twice a month.
What to Expect
Our group volunteering sessions are fun, welcoming, well-organised, and genuinely meaningful. You'll get hands-on with a variety of activities that directly help children and families access books and develop a love of reading.
We're especially excited to welcome volunteers to our brilliant new home at Tyseley Energy Park. We have lots of books to prepare and plenty of schools waiting to receive them, so it's an especially busy and exciting time for us.
Activities on the day will include:
- Sorting and reviewing donations of pre-loved books
- Categorising and packing books ready for gifting
- Preparing book collections for local schools and families
- Creating celebratory bunting and special touches to accompany donations
Every task helps ensure that children across Birmingham and North Solihull receive high-quality books to enjoy and keep.

We're a friendly, welcoming team and are always looking for individuals and groups who want to make a positive difference in their community. No previous experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.

The Children’s Book Project is a registered charity working with settings across the UK to redistribute thousands of pre-loved and surplus books to the children and families who need them most.
Our work is rooted in sustainability. We collect books that children have outgrown or no longer read and gift them to those living in the most disadvantaged circumstances. This year, we are on a mission to donate one million books. Through our project, children in local schools are able to choose and keep books of their own, many for the first time.
