About Cuppa Squad
Cuppa Squad was founded in 2015 on the belief that when people living with a particular illness come together, they can learn from one another, share experiences and provide mutual support, leading to better outcomes for everyone.
Our specific focus has been diabetes, a condition on which the NHS spends around 10% of its budget, with approximately 80% of this expenditure relating to avoidable complications. Based on feedback from local groups, counsellors and other like-minded charities, the model developed around diabetes is now being expanded to reach out and support people living with other long-term health conditions.
By bringing people together in community groups, Cuppa Squad offers a low-cost approach rooted in prevention, education and peer support. From its first group, the organisation has expanded over the last 10 years to ten locations across Birmingham and has supported more than 250,000 people.
Cuppa Squad primarily addresses “People having greater wellbeing” by improving participants’ mental, physical and social health. The profile of people attending Cuppa Squad groups varies considerably, encompassing different ages, ethnic backgrounds and people living with disabilities. These characteristics are often influenced by the communities and locations in which groups have been established across Birmingham.
Over the last 10 years, Cuppa Squad has developed a strong understanding of how to organise and deliver effective community groups, with a particular focus on:
