As an Outreach Worker Volunteer, you will provide practical support, advice and advocacy to people experiencing homelessness or hardship.

Location: Birmingham

Time: Saturdays 12 pm - 4 pm

Time: Flexible

Work style: In person

About the role

Through frontline outreach, you will help individuals access essential supplies, emergency accommodation and services that can improve their health, wellbeing and independence.

You will build trusting relationships with people who may be experiencing significant challenges, providing a compassionate and non-judgemental point of contact and helping them take practical steps towards greater stability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out outreach across the community, building positive and trusting relationships with people experiencing homelessness or hardship.
  • Distribute survival kits, food and other essential items to people sleeping rough or experiencing crisis.
  • Provide practical advice, signposting and guidance on benefits, healthcare, housing, employment and other relevant services.
  • Support individuals to access appropriate education, training and employment opportunities.
  • Help individuals engage with housing, healthcare, mental health and other support services.
  • Assist with project coordination and community initiatives.
  • Support fundraising activities and help raise awareness of the organisation's work.
  • Promote the organisation's work and values through appropriate social media and community activity.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers and external organisations to ensure individuals receive appropriate support.

What difference will you make?

Through your work, you will help to:

  • Connect people experiencing homelessness with emergency accommodation and longer-term housing support.
  • Improve access to benefits, healthcare, mental health services and other essential support.
  • Help individuals rebuild confidence, develop independence and engage with employment, education or training.
  • Reduce isolation and strengthen connections between vulnerable individuals and their local community.
  • Promote fairness, dignity and inclusion through compassionate, person-centred support.

We are looking for people who are:

  • Compassionate, reliable and committed to supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship.
  • Comfortable working hands-on in the community and engaging with people from a range of backgrounds.
  • Strong communicators and active listeners who can provide clear, practical guidance.
  • Able to build and maintain positive relationships based on trust and respect.
  • Solution-focused, adaptable and proactive.
  • Empathetic, patient and non-judgemental.
  • Able to work appropriately with people who may be experiencing complex or challenging circumstances.
  • Willing to work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers and external organisations.

Experience of outreach work or supporting vulnerable people, including people experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges or other barriers to accessing services, is desirable but not essential. We are more interested in the right attitude, values and willingness to learn.

Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment

We are committed to safeguarding the people we support, our volunteers and the wider community. All volunteers are expected to follow our safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and professional boundaries policies and procedures.

As part of our safer recruitment process:

  • Volunteers are required to complete an application process and appropriate suitability checks before starting the role.
  • References may be requested as part of the recruitment process.
  • A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required where the role meets the relevant eligibility criteria.
  • Volunteers must disclose any relevant information that may affect their suitability for the role.
  • Volunteers will receive appropriate safeguarding guidance and induction before undertaking independent outreach. Any safeguarding concerns must be reported promptly in line with our safeguarding procedures.

We reserve the right to carry out additional checks or take appropriate safeguarding measures where necessary to protect the people we support.

Volunteer Commitment

This is a voluntary role and does not constitute paid employment. Volunteers are expected to carry out their role responsibly, follow organisational policies and procedures, and communicate with the organisation if they are unable to attend an agreed outreach session.

We will provide appropriate induction, guidance and support to help volunteers carry out their role safely and effectively.
