A unique opportunity to make a life changing difference Joining our Lourdes pilgrimage as a Companion is a chance to be part of something truly special.

To provide companionship, emotional support, general assistance and practical support to assisted travellers with a range of disabilities or medical needs during a Jumbulance trip to Lourdes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer friendly conversation, reassurance, and a positive presence throughout the trip.
  • Help create an inclusive, fun, and welcoming atmosphere for all participants.
  • Support individuals who may feel anxious, isolated, or nervous about travel.
  • Assist travellers with everyday tasks where needed (e.g., fetching drinks, helping at mealtimes, supporting mobility under guidance).
  • Accompany travellers during excursions and activities.
  • Safely push and manoeuvre manual wheelchairs including correct use of brakes, footplates and straps.
  • Support travellers with getting on and off the Jumbulance, under guidance from staff and care team.
  • Help with luggage, settling in at accommodation, and general trip logistics

What This Role Does Not Involve

Companion Volunteers are not expected to perform personal care, administer medication, or undertake any clinical tasks. These are carried out by the medical team or trained carers.

You don’t need prior experience—just the right attitude. Helpful qualities include:

  • Kindness, patience, and empathy
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • A calm approach in busy or unfamiliar situations
  • Reliability and willingness to work as part of a team
  • Respect for people’s dignity, independence, and choices
  • A sense of humour and enjoyment of group activities or travel

Fundraising Commitment

There is an expectation for volunteers to fundraise £845 towards the cost of their place. Every penny helps make this trip happen, and we’ll provide ideas and resources to help you reach your target. If this is a barrier to your volunteering, please let us know.
