Summary
Our volunteers visit their matched school each week and listen to children read individually.Detailed description
Role:
Volunteers will be matched with a primary school that is local to them. They will listen to children read individually and help to support their reading and comprehension development. They will work with the same children or class each week.
Commitment:
We ask our volunteers to visit their school weekly for an hour or two during the school day and we ask that they commit to visiting their school for at least a full year, although appointments and holidays can be taken during this time.
Requirements:
We do not ask for any specific skills or prior experience from our volunteers but we do need them to be over 18 and have good written and spoken English. They will also need to have a DBS check carried out (the cost of which is covered but the school and is at no cost to the volunteer).
Training / Support:
All volunteers, once they have been approved following their application and telephone interview, will need to complete a short "reading guidance" training module and a short "safeguarding" module. These can be completed online or on paper. We have regular online forums for our volunteers where training is given in phonics, comprehension, working with reluctant readers etc and we have a small but dedicated office team who are able to answer any questions.
Expenses:
Unfortunately, we are unable to reimburse any travel expenses but you will be matched with a school that you are able to walk to or happy to travel to.
