About the volunteering roles
These one-off volunteering opportunities are designed specifically for young people aged 14-21 to help them develop their understanding of specific health topics, learn more about the NHS and wider health system and explore the prospect of a future career in health and social care. Participants get involved in short ‘micro-projects’ during the school holidays, each linked to a different clinical area. Some projects last just a few hours, while others run over several days or weeks – offering valuable insight into the world of healthcare. The volunteering projects take place in a range of venues across Birmingham, such as at NHS Trust and Foundation sites or at schools.
This role involves
The volunteering activities vary from project to project, but generally involve:
- Committing anywhere between half a day to a few days to a health volunteering project.
- Developing your understanding of a specific health topic such as asthma or immunisations.
- Participating in research or fieldwork.
- Sharing your learnings with others.

Feedback so far
Feedback from students and staff alike has been fantastic, with young people excited to have developed skills and have real health experience within a short window of time. Impact from volunteering to the heath service has also been meaningful with staff saying how beneficial the voices and experiences of young people have been for their services.
