A chance conversation that changed everything

"I’m Vicky, and I volunteer for Age Connects West Midlands.  I am a former head teacher and I live in Boldmere. I became involved with Age Connects WM around March 2020, during lockdown. It was an opportune meeting when the Volunteer Manager was dropping off a cream tea to our next door neighbour for VE Day! I remember thinking what a thoughtful and lovely thing to do, especially given the challenging (and for some, isolating) circumstances we all found ourselves in.

"I found myself chatting easily to Claire about the work Age Concern Birmingham do and enquiring how I might be able to volunteer my help. This chance meeting made me reflect on how difficult it must be for those living on their own, and how lonely life must be. I very soon offered to become a befriender, and in the early days I made regular phone calls to three people.

"It was so easy chatting and taking an interest in their varied lives and it was really clear how much they valued the conversations. I remember all of them expressing their relief that they’d ‘not been forgotten’ and were thankful that someone cared.

"With time passing, I’ve ended up meeting all three early telephone friends in person. As life as changes and peoples situations change I have gone on to befriend more people. I have also volunteered at events, promoting volunteering and the wider ACWM services 

"I remain a befriender and have no intention of stopping. Knowing what the calls mean to each of them is hugely satisfying and it’s such a simple act of kindness.

"I feel proud to be associated with Age Connects WM and am always impressed by the variety of work they do. There’s plenty to offer the local community ranging from a drop in cafe to painting classes, and there’s even a veterans group. So, my advice to anyone who has a little spare time, is why don’t you give it a go!"
