We need volunteers to help with our monthly members' meetings - setting up, welcoming people, facilitating activities and clearing up afterwards.
Our monthly members' meetings are the core activity of the Journey Group. They are a safe space, where our members can connect with each other and form a supportive community. Our meetings regularly attract up to 50 members, and it takes quite a few volunteers to make sure they run smoothly. We are hoping to build a team of regular volunteers for these meetings, so are looking for people who can make a regular, ongoing commitment.
Volunteer duties include setting out chairs and tables, greeting members and making conversation, helping distribute refreshments, helping facilitate meeting activities, and putting everything back at the end of the meeting. The main role for all volunteers is talking with members - checking in on how they are, making them feel welcome, and putting them at ease.
It is a great opportunity to join a small, friendly and committed team, to develop confidence and communication skills, to gain knowledge of the asylum and immigration sector, and to help support people living with trauma, fear, isolation and mental health challenges. We offer training and a designated supervisor/mentor to all our volunteers.
Our meetings are once a month on Tuesday afternoons, usually the last Tuesday of the month, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, in Birmingham city centre. Please only apply if you can be available at this time. The upcoming dates are...
Tuesday 26th May
Tuesday 23rd June
Tuesday 28th July
Tuesday 25th August
If you can make these dates, and would like to help support LGBT+ asylum seekers, then we'd love to hear from you.
