Summary
Helping organise and run a monthly meeting for LGBT+ asylum seekers and refugees in Birmingham and the West Midlands.Detailed description
Every month we hold a meeting for up to 50 members in Birmingham City Centre. These meetings take place on Tuesday afternoons.
Due to the numbers attending and venue requirements, our monthly meetings take quite a lot of volunteers to run smoothly.
Volunteers help to:
- Prepare the meeting content (topics, slides, guests)
- Set up the room
- Register attendees
- Greet members
- Facilitate activities and discussions
- Hand out food
- Clear up afterwards
Volunteers should be:
- A member or ally of the LGBT+ community
- Empathetic and non-judgemental
- Committed to working in a team
- Able to adhere to the group’s code of conduct and policies on data protection, equality and safeguarding
All our volunteers have a designated contact for support and advice. We also offer training and shadowing, to boost confidence and build skills.
The impact of the role:
The monthly meetings are a key part of our work. This is where our members feel safe to be themselves, make friends and build a community and support network. These meetings are also an opportunity to share important information, or simply have fun. Topics have ranged from how to prepare for Home Office detention to singing workshops, hip hop tasters to sexual health. Supporting us to deliver these meetings is a chance to help us welcome new members, combat isolation, build confidence and empower our members.
