To fulfil our mission and vision, RMC offers advice and guidance in the areas of housing and destitution, training, employment, health and immigration.  RMC provides a free drop-in service with face-to-face, holistic advice, support and guidance to clients.

 

This role will be based at the Birmingham office, working in a friendly, supportive environment alongside staff and fellow volunteers.  We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Learning Support Tutor Volunteer, to support children and young people aged 10–18 through planned educational sessions delivered twice a week.

 

Classes are 90 minutes long and focus on Maths, English, ICT, and vocational subjects, helping learners to build confidence, improve academic skills, and develop pathways toward further education, training, or employment.  This role plays a vital part in supporting young people to reach their potential and overcome barriers to learning.

 

This role is suitable for individuals with prior tutoring or teaching experience, or those currently studying towards a teaching, education, or related qualification.

Role Description

The role of our Learning Support Tutor Volunteer is vital to the success of RMC in supporting our young people. The role is face-to-face and involves:

  • Delivering engaging, high-quality tutoring sessions face-to-face, to small groups of learners
  • Planning 90-minute lessons in advance in line with learner needs and programme goals
  • Supporting learners Maths, English, ICT and vocational subject areas
  • Working with small groups and individuals to provide tailored academic support
  • Monitoring learner progress and adapting activities accordingly
  • Providing encouragement, motivation and positive role modelling
  • Supporting basic assessments to identify learning levels and support needs
  • Maintaining accurate session records and contributing to programme administration

 

Skills required

Previous tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or classroom support experience is required. You will need to be confident working with children and young people aged 10–18 and have a patient, supportive approach to learning.  Subject knowledge in one or more of Maths, English, ICT, or vocational areas is essential.

 

You should be reliable, organised, and able to commit to two sessions per week.

 

We provide a full induction, safeguarding training, and ongoing support, but the following skills are essential for this role:

  • Ability to plan and deliver structured lessons
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence working with small groups and individuals
  • Ability to motivate and engage learners with different needs
  • Willingness to work as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries with young people
  • Understanding and commitment to safeguarding and equal opportunities
  • Basic ICT (email, online resources, simple admin tasks)
  • A good level of English speaking, reading and writing

 

Having a basic understanding of the immigration system and issues people seeking sanctuary and asylum, refugees and migrants face, is ideal; however, immigration-related advice can only be offered by IAA supervised or qualified caseworkers.

 

Speaking a language or languages, in addition to English, is desirable, but not essential. However, we are actively recruiting volunteers who can speak Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, French, Spanish, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, Italian.

RMC is dedicated to helping disadvantaged refugees and migrants fully integrate into UK life and achieve independence. Our service provides comprehensive integration support to a diverse range of clients, including asylum seekers, refugees, EU migrants, undocumented people and those with uncertain immigration status. Our service provides casework, advice and guidance on key areas including immigration, housing/homelessness/destitution, financial independence, employment and education, and health. We run in-house workshops and classes such as English (ESOL) classes to enhance the skills of our clients, and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training delivered by qualified trainers to upskill clients and professionals.
