About Birmingham Adult Education Service

Birmingham Adult Education Service (BAES) is looking for Volunteer Learning Support Assistants to support our adult learners (Post 19+) in various community learning settings including On-site and Virtual classrooms located at our adult learning centres, as well as outreach centres across the city.


Volunteers are needed to provide additional learning support to individuals and groups under the full supervision of the class teacher, throughout the academic year, in a variety of accredited and vocational/leisure courses at different levels (from beginners to advanced) including: Maths, English, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), GCSE Biology, various IT & Business courses, Counselling and Mentoring Skills, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), British Sign Language (BSL), Floristry, Sewing & Textiles, Arts & Crafts, as well as a range of SEND courses for Learners with Disabilities and Learning Difficulties, and short introductory courses.

Experience is not essential. However, we need volunteers who have good communication skills, can work effectively with others, are reliable (weekly attendance termtime) can demonstrate empathy, patience, as well as a readiness to complete all relevant training and procedures required for the role.


Volunteers recruited in core subjects such as Maths and English Language are expected to hold Level 2 qualifications as a minimum.


No payments are made to volunteers. Travel expenses for public transport can be claimed if requested. Relevant in-house (unaccredited) training opportunities are offered for personal/role development when available. Progression into paid employment is encouraged where appropriate.


Right to Work checks and references will be required. In addition, an Enhanced DBS check must be completed before volunteer placements are confirmed. This is at no cost to the volunteer.
